Bio: One of the most successful rock acts of the seventies, eighties, and nineties, Genesis enjoyed quite a lengthy career as one of the early supergroups, a longevity only exceeded by bands like the Rolling Stones and the Kinks. Genesis also provided a launching pad for the superstardom of members Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins who went on to have enormously successful solo careers after the dissolution of the group. Genesis had its roots in the Garden Wall, a band founded by Peter Gabriel and Tony Banks in 1965 at Charterhouse School in Godalming, Surrey, where fellow students Michael Rutherford and Anthony Phillips were members of another group called Anon. The two groups initially merged out of necessity as the older members of each group graduated; Gabriel, Banks, Rutherford, Phillips, and drummer Chris Stewart soon joined together as the New Anon, and recorded a six-song demo featuring songs primarily written by Rutherford and Phillips. This demo was eventually heard by record producer Jonathan King who encouraged the talent of these young musicians and was also responsible for renaming the band Genesis. After Stewart, then Phillips, left the band, Phil Collins replaced Phillips on drums. At the time, Peter Gabriel was still the lead singer, but following his departure the group pressed on as a trio with Collins also assuming the role of lead singer.
