Christina Aguilera, the pint-sized diva with the monstrous voice captivated audiences during her Back to Basics Tour stop at Madison Square Garden during her sold out concert
on Friday April 6, 2007. Aguilera opened the show with her signature, "Heyyyy--eeeyaaayyy---eeeyyyaaaayyy," and right from the onset her stage presence was made known to one and all. Christina appeared on stage in a Tennessee Williams inspired white suit with a hat pulled down low over her face for her opening number and the crowd went wild. Combined with her powerful vocal performance and stratospheric range, Aguilera's elaborate sets, exotic costumes, tightly choreographed dance routines and overall stage show set this live performance apart from some of the other 'former' Mouseketeer pop music stars of the day. Aguilera continued her concert with a soulful rendition of "Back in the Day," which pays tribute to music legends such as Aretha Franklin and James Brown and from here progressed to the sultry ballad "Understand." Christina performed a titillating rendition of "Dirty" from her "Stripped" album after emerging from below the stage on top of an amusement park carousel horse. Aguilera also performed her current hit single, "Candyman," which got everyone in the audience up on their feet singing and dancing along. Yet another costume change ensued and, with Christina and her dancers wearing sailor outfits, the audience was really moving to the "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" inspired tune. Aguilera also performed "Makes Me Wanna Pray" and "Moulin Rouge" and by this point in the show had the audience eating out of the palm of her hand. Christina blew the top off of the Garden with what was perhaps her best ever live redition of "Ain't No Other."
Opening acts were Danity Kane, the P-Diddy manufactured girl group, and The Pussycat Dolls. While each of the opening acts had some fans in attendance, Aguilera stole the show in what will be forever remembered as an intense, somewhat comical, somewhat sexy, somewhat burlesque-like show brought to you by one of the foremost pop music vocalists and performers of the day.
