Name: Katharine McPhee
Date of Birth: March 25, 1984
Origin: Sherman Oaks, California
Instrument: Vocals
Bio: Katharine McPhee was the runner-up during the 2006 edition of American Idol. Although she was not able to walk away with the ultimate title, Katharine McPhee's good looks and solid vocals made her a crowd favorite and a consistent contender throughout the competition. Katharine gave many wonderful performances during her stint on American Idol and even moved her Dad to tears during one show. Katharine McPhee's vocals are a mix of blues, soul and pop, which makes her singing intricate, sultry and appealing. McPhee began singing as a little girl and was influenced in her early years by her mother, Patricia McPhee, who is also a talented singer. Patricia helped Katharine develop as a vocalist and provided formal musical training for her daughter throughout her childhood. Though McPhee sang and acted throughout her grade-school and high-school years, she began taking singing more seriously in college, eventually attending Boston Conservatory as a musical theater major. After three semesters at Boston Conservatory, Katharine left for Los Angeles to pursue an acting career. Her good looks and talent enabled her to land roles in the film Crazy, a musical about Hank Garland and a part in an MTV series called You Are Here, which never aired. McPhee performed such songs as "Someone to Watch Over Me," "Come Rain or Come Shine," and "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree" during her run on Idol. Her renditions of each of these songs and the personal touch she added complemented what were already excellent songs and elevated Katharine to a new level of performer - one of the favorites of, both, the American Idol judges and the viewing (and voting) audience. After American Idol ended, McPhee inked a record deal with Simon Fuller's 19 Recordings Limited label and released her first single, "Somewhere Over the Rainbow/My Destiny." This song became the second best-selling single of 2006. Katharine toured with the other finalists of American Idol, as well as with Andrea Bocelli, who appeared as a guest judge during one American Idol show. McPhee began recording her self-titled debut album in the fall. "Over It," one of the first singles from the album, was released several weeks before the album and did very well.
