Bio: Christina Aguilera is one of the most popular female singers of the late-'90s teen pop revival. Unlike many of her contemporaries, Aguilera is also a technically skilled singer with a genuinely powerful voice. Born Christina Maria Aguilera on December 18, 1980, on Staten Island, her parents were of Irish and Ecuadorian descent and her father's military career meant the family moved quite a bit during her childhood. The Aguileras eventually settled in Pittsburgh, PA, where Christina began performing in talent shows with considerable success. She also appeared on Star Search in 1988 (although she didn't win) and in 1992 joined the cast of the Disney Channel's The New Mickey Mouse Club, which also included Britney Spears, future *NSYNC members Justin Timberlake and JC Chasez, and Felicity star Keri Russell. Aguilera was signed to RCA Records after recording "Reflection" for the film Mulan-a song that required someone with an extensive vocal range. Her bubblegum pop debut album Christina Aguilera (1999) was a critical and commercial success and included the hit single, "Genie In A Bottle." The album earned Christina a Grammy Award for Best New Artist in 2000. A Latin Pop album Mi Reflejo, which won a 2001 Latin Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album, and a Christmas album My Kind of Christmas released during this period, also sold strongly. Aguilera has sold over 30 million records internationally since her debut. Aguilera took creative control over her second studio album Stripped, released in 2002. While it received mixed reviews and earned Aguilera a Grammy Award, her overtly sexual image during the album's promotion became the subject of intense criticism and ridicule. Her third studio album Back to Basics (2006) included elements of soul, jazz and blues music.
