The Blues Essentially, the blues combines the styles of the songs sung by field workers, slaves and spiritual individuals. emerged out of a time period when African Americans finally broke away from the chains of slavery and was an opportunity for the emancipated to express their feeling for this new found freedom.

No longer under the clutches of this institution, this wave of musical expression veered away from the African American standard of collective, group singing often times associated with religious ceremonies. Instead, the blues was heading into a direction of secular and personalized music.

The BB Kings , Muddy Watters and Steve Ray Vaughns of the world were crossing over and picking up Rock audiences.

Because of the origin of this genre, the early blues had remained an exclusively African American industry.

Legends have grown out of the blues as a result including names such as BB King and Aretha Franklin,
