Name: The Greencards
Date of Birth: 2003
Origin: Austin, Texas
Instrument: Guitar, Violin, Banjo
Bio: The Greencards are a progressive bluegrass band that formed in Austin, Texas but have since moved to Nashville, Tennessee. The band, founded in 2003, started out by performing at local bars in Austin to garner attention & a fan base. Thus far they have released four albums: Movin On, Weather & Water, Viridian & Fascination. Movin On didn’t garner much success in spite of charting on the billboard charts. However CMT ranked Weather & Water as one of the ten best bluegrass albums on 2005. As a result of their newfound success they were asked to tour with Bob Dylan & Willie Nelson that year.
The band’s album Viridian only did better grabbing the top spot on the billboard charts & winning them a Best Country Album award in Australia. The song “Mucky the Duck” off the album was also nominated for a Grammy Award.
The band consists of two Australians & an Englishman; as a result people claim their bluegrass sound has a “worldlly” sound to it. The band originally came together as a result of their similar interests, including Monty Python & Benny Hill. The term critics have given The Greencards due to their sound is “newgrass” which is simply a newer bluegrass. The band draws from Irish folk music, gypsy music, rock & roll & Latin American music, which only adds to their “worldly” feel.
While the members of The Greencards had some success as singles artists prior to forming the band they have had even bigger success as a group. Young won countless awards in Australia for her singing & been nominated for Best Female Vocalist numerous times in Australia, she also had a hit single “True Blue Fool.” The band is said to have musical influences from George Jones, George Strait & Ricky Skaggs.
Each member of the group started with music at an extremely young age which has developed a passion in each of them. The band name came to fruition simply because each member is an immigrant & they had to acquire green cards to stay in the states.
