Bio: Ricky Skaggs is an American bluegrass artist who was born in Blaine, Kentucky. He started playing music as a young boy after his father gave him a mandolin. He played on a variety of stages & television shows as a young boy. Skaggs also tried to audition for the Grand Ole Opry at 7 years old but was told he was too young. After plying his craft for another few years Skaggs earned a spot opening for bluegrass legend Ralph Stanley. After a successful tour Skaggs was offered a spot in Stanleys Clinch Mountain Boys. Skaggs joined them then later joined New South & Hot Band before embarking on a solo career.
In addition to Skaggs success with a mandolin he has also quite a knack for playing the fiddle as well. Skaggs has indicated he loves playing the old style of music & thoroughly enjoys being a pioneer for bluegrass music. To this day he is embraced for keeping close to his bluegrass roots, in spite of occasionally experimenting with new sounds.
With his band Kentucky Thunder Skaggs has found great success & is a perennial winner of Grammy Awards & International Bluegrass Music Association awards for best bluegrass album.
Skaggs has also been known to collaborate with other artists. He has performed on stage with Phish, recorded an album with Bruce Hornsby & sang with the Raconteurs. He has also recorded an album he recorded with The Whites on his own record label, the Skaggs Family Records label.
With Skaggs releasing another album later this month there is no telling what the future holds for this bluegrass legend.
