Name: Rhonda Vincent and The Rage
Date of Birth: July 13, 1962
Origin: Kirksville, Missouri
Instrument: Mandolin, Guitar, Fiddle
Bio: Rhonda Vincent is a bluegrass singer who grew up in the music business. She plays the mandolin, guitar & fiddle. Her music career began in her family’s band The Sally Mountain Show & she is still going today. She achieved her greatest successes in the 70’s & 80’s when she gained the respect of her primarily male peers for mastering the bluegrass sound.
Vincent’s brother is also a star in bluegrass as one half of the super group Dailey & Vincent. At age eight Rhonda learned how to play the mandolin, then shortly after she began learning how to play the guitar. She even took lessons to help her gain the required knowledge. Throughout high school & college she’d perform along with various bluegrass bands.
In 1985 she was involved with a TV series that ran on TNN called “You Can Be A Star” in the hopes of catching her big break. After winning the contract she was signed to a recording contract & began performing with Grand Ole Opry star Jim Ed Brown. During the 1990’s she tried her hand at country/pop music but had no success & didn’t enjoy it. As a result in 2000 she returned to her bluegrass roots.
The International Bluegrass Music Association gave her the Female Vocalist of the Year award every year from 2000 to 2006. She also won for Entertainer of the Year in 2001. The SPBGMA also named her Entertainer of the Year for 2002 to 2006. In addition to her own success she also had found success performing with her band The Rage.
Rhonda is married to Herb Sandker & they have two daughters. Their daughter Sally recently wed Rhonda’s fiddle player Hunter Berry. The two daughters have continued the family musical tradition performing alongside their mother & creating a group of their own called Next Best Thing.
