Bio: The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band is bluegrass royalty that was formed in 1966 in Long Beach, California. For a few months in the beginning of the groups tenure the band featured vocalist Jackson Browne, who went on to have a fairly successful singles career. The band started as a jug band & blended into a southern California folk rock band. They would perform in clubs wearing pinstripe suits & cowboy boots.
Their first hit single was Buy for Me the Rain which they performed on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. Other acts who were starting to slow down their careers started allowing the band to tour with them to perform the song. In 1968 the band incorporated electrical instruments & drums into the fold. They put out two albums with an electrical sound that were utter failures, resulting in them being called a novelty act, though in 1969 they did perform as an opening act for Bill Cosby.
As the decade turned the band was gaining an even bigger following, which prompted them to release a compilation album called Dirt, Silver & Gold. Around this same time they began going by The Dirt Band. They were the first band ever allowed by the US to do a tour in Russia. The concerts were televised & over 145 million people tuned in.
As their popularity grew they began appearing everywhere. They even did backup vocals for Steve Martin on Saturday Night Live when he sang King Tut. In 1982 they went back to their full band name again belting out countless hits throughout the decade. They appeared on The Today Show & The Tonight Show in the same week before going on a tour of Europe.
The band put together a few albums from 1990 to 2000 but had better success during the decade with compilation albums. In 1992 George HW Bush mentioned them by the name Nitty Ditty Nitty Gritty Great Bird at a country music awards ceremony in Nashville.
The band continues to put out new music whenever they can, as well as trying to tour as much as they can. Their most recent album just hit shelves last year & they continue to work on new material.
