Originally McCoury was hired to be a banjo player for Bill Monroe’s Bluegrass Boys in the early 60’s but eventually ended up singing lead vocals & playing rhythm guitar. During which time the band appeared on the Grand Ole Opry. A year later McCoury appeared with the Golden State Boys while in between labor jobs to make money. While working as a laborer McCoury still played music in Maryland, Virginia & Pennsylvania.
In the 90’s fiddler Tad Marks & bass player Mike Brantley joined the band & the band began touring throughout the US. As they started to grow a bigger fanbase they moved to Nashville, Tennessee where they added a few new members over the past twenty years. In 2003 McCoury became a member of the Grand Ole Opry.
McCoury has contributed a great deal to the music business including offering fans recordings of their performances on USB flash drives after their concerts finished. He also created DelFest for all of his Del-Heads to enjoy his song stylings. He has appeared on both David Letterman & Conan O’Brien & continues to expand on his musical horizon to this day.
